April's Albo Had Root Rot. Here's Exactly Why — And How To Make Sure Yours Doesn't

The Phone Call
April called me a few weeks back. I'd met her through one of my giveaways — she'd won, we got chatting, and she'd been growing ever since. This time she wasn't calling to say hi. Her Albo had brown leaves, and she wanted to know what was going on.
I didn't even need to see it. "Pull it out," I told her. "Have a look at the roots, then get back to me."
What She Found
She sent me a photo a few minutes later. Roots gone dark, soft, blackened in places — the kind of thing that tells you everything before you even ask a question. Root rot.
She was gutted. Not just disappointed — genuinely upset. Crying-upset. For weeks she'd been quietly stewing on it, going over everything in her head, trying to work out what she'd done wrong. Was it the water? The light? Something she fed it? Something she forgot?
Here's the thing — she hadn't done anything unusually wrong. She'd been growing the way most people grow. That's exactly the problem, and it's why I'm writing this down instead of just telling her privately. If you're growing in regular soil right now, this isn't a "some people" problem. It's a "when," not an "if."
What I Told Her To Do Next
First step — cut away every bit of dead, mushy root. Not most of it. All of it. Don't make the mistake of leaving anything behind that still feels soft or looks dark, even if it means cutting close to the stem. Rotted root tissue isn't just dead weight — it's actively hosting the same bacteria and fungal pathogens that caused the rot in the first place. Leave any of it on, and you've just given the infection a place to sit and wait for the new roots you're about to grow.

Once the dead roots were gone, we put what was left of the plant straight into water in that setup, with a diluted mix of GT Oxy-Plus 3% (hydrogen peroxide) added in.
Here's why that matters, and why I want to actually explain the chemistry instead of just telling you to do it.
Hydrogen peroxide is water with one extra oxygen atom stuck on — H2O2 instead of H2O. That extra atom doesn't want to be there. It's unstable, and given the chance it breaks free, and when it does, it happens fast — you'll see it fizz. That fast release of oxygen is what does two things at once: it rips apart the cell structure of anything single-celled floating in that water — bacteria, fungal spores, the exact pathogens behind the rot — while at the same time flooding the area around the roots with pure oxygen. What's left over once the reaction's done is just water and oxygen. Nothing toxic, nothing that hangs around.
This is also, by the way, exactly how oxygen-based cleaning and sanitising products work at home. They're not "killing germs" with some scary chemical — they're using that same fast oxygen release to physically knock apart anything living on the surface, then breaking down into water and oxygen and leaving nothing behind.
The dose is everything here. Get it right and it's genuinely one of the best tools you've got — a burst of oxygen and a knockdown of the rot pathogens, with no harm to the plant. Get the concentration too strong and that same reaction happens to your plant's own living root and stem cells, not just the bad guys. At the right dose it's your best friend. At the wrong one, it'll finish the job the rot started. That's why I used it heavily diluted on a cutting that already had almost nothing left to work with — go gentle when there's barely any root left to protect, and always start weaker than you think you need to.

Goldfish vs Tropical Fish
Here's how I explain it to people who are new to this. Think about keeping fish.
A goldfish will live in almost anything. Tap water, a bit of neglect, a tank that's not quite right — goldfish just get on with it. That's your Peace Lily, your everyday range. Tough, forgiving, grows in almost anything, almost anywhere.
Tropical fish are a different story. It's not that they're hard — it's that they're precise. One degree off on the water temp, pH a bit out, and you can lose them. Nothing dramatic needs to go wrong. Just a small thing, ignored.
Your variegated Albo is a tropical fish. Ask yourself right now — are you keeping it like a goldfish? If it's sitting in regular potting soil, being watered whenever it looks a bit dry, the answer is yes. And that's exactly how April's went.
So What Actually Went Wrong?
The roots rotted because they couldn't breathe. Soil holds water, water fills every gap, and there's no room left for oxygen. The roots aren't drowning in the way people picture — they're suffocating.
The advice you'll hear everywhere is "just let your soil dry out more between waterings." If someone's told you that, here's what happens next: it helps with the rot, sure. But it creates a new problem — a dehydrated plant. And a dehydrated tropical plant starts turning brown too, just from the other direction. You haven't fixed anything. You've swapped one way of losing the plant for another, and you're about to find that out the hard way, same as April did.
That's not the answer. The answer is growing the plant in a medium that gives the roots oxygen and water at the same time, so you're never trading one problem for the other.

There's more than one way to get there, and plenty of them work. But I've got one way that works for anyone — even someone with zero experience — because if you can follow a recipe, you can do this.
